Though I imagine that the "CockStars" line would be aimed at a more, er, adult audience, I am a huge fan of most designer toys. I've got Mighty Muggs, Quees, Frenzies et al lining the shelves in my office. It is a really cool way to interpret some of the characters and properties that we know and love. I've never really been one for busts or statues, but for some reason these types of toys speak to me.

The really interesting ones are the original toys. Much like the Blank Cover comic, you can buy "blank" figures for artist to paint on, draw on or even just doodle with. They really seem to be a great bridge between the traditional toy or action figure and an art community.

Even the non-comic or superhero toys fascinate me. Many of them come blind-boxed as well, so there is a fun collectibility to them that's different than trying to round up as many Captain America's as you can at Target or Toys 'r' Us. Not that I don't sometimes do that as well, mind you.

If you are at all interested in designer toys, I highly suggest picking up Paul Budnitz' book "I Am Plastic" and it's sequel "I Am Plastic Too." He is the founder of Kidrobot, one of the pioneers of the designer toy movement, and he knows his stuff. The books are packed with rare, exciting and one-of-a-kind toys from around the world.

Today's page comes to us from the ever-wonderful, Mr. Ryan Lee:

Ryan Lee is a freelance illustrator and designer diligently working out of his home studio surrounded by foxes and spiders in Northwestern Michigan. Since his graduation from the College for Creative Studies in 1999, he has been steadily working in various creative mediums including (but not limited to) illustration, advertising, graphic design, character design, fine art painting, and storyboards. Most recently, Ryan has refocused his work efforts on the comic book industry, a passion of his since he first picked up a pen as a child.

Enjoy New Comic Day, my friends! See you back here Friday!
