Explanation: Why is Saturn's small moon Telesto so smooth? Possibly Telesto is covered with a type of granular icy material similar to that suspected of covering Pandora, another of Saturn's small moon's. If so, Telesto might be more like a pile of rubble than a solid body. This recently uncovered Solar System mystery is currently a topic of research, however. The unexpected finding originated last October when the robot Cassini spacecraft, currently orbiting Saturn, swooped past the 24-kilometer moon and captured the first ever image of Telesto's surface. Telesto orbits Saturn always just ahead of the much larger moon Tethys. Pictured above, Telesto's unusually smooth surface was found to show some large craters and boulders, but not the high density of craters found on nearby Tethys or most other Saturnian moons.

Getto’s Warschau
In 1940 worden op bevel van de Duitse overheid overal in het bezette Polen getto's opgericht. Arme stadsdelen, waarin toch al vele joden wonen, worden tot “joodse woonwijken” uitgeroepen. Alle joden moeten naar die wijken verhuizen, alle anderen moeten er weg. Wanneer de “evacuatie” is beëindigd, wordt het getto door de politie vergrendeld en door een omheining of een muur omsloten. Wie probeert het te verlaten, riskeert de doodstraf of executie ter plaatse door de bewakers. In deze getto’s leefden tussen de 100 000 en 400 000 joden.
De joodse raden trachten vergeefs een functionerend sociaal leven te organiseren en de voedselvoorziening te verzekeren. Ze zijn onderworpen aan het gezag van de Duitse burgeradministratie, deze ressorteert op haar beurt onder de Gestapo. De getto's zijn niet in staat in hun eigen levensonderhoud te voorzien. In die getto's waar Duitse bedrijven zich vestigen vanwege de goedkope arbeidskrachten, zoals in Warschau, kunnen ze slechts een minderheid tewerkstellen. Smokkelen, met gevaar voor eigen leven, wordt een absolute noodzaak. In Lodz, waar iedereen verplicht is te werken maar smokkel onmogelijk is, heerst er ook hongersnood. De armoede breidt zich uit, de sociale tegenstellingen verscherpen. Dappere mensen proberen via sociale en culturele activiteiten hun eigen menselijke waardigheid en die van anderen te behouden, maar de ondergang is onvermijdelijk.
In de getto’s zelf vinden zeker 96 000 mensen de dood ter gevolge van overbevolkte huizen, de voortdurende ondervoeding en de rampzalige sanitaire omstandigheden.
Begin 1942 begint de SS met het wegvoeren van joden naar de vernietigingskampen. De
opvangtehuizen voor daklozen, de bejaarden- en kindertehuizen, de gevangenissen en de
ziekenhuizen moeten er eerst aan geloven. In het begin proberen de nazi's de mensen te
lokken met eten, wanneer dit niet meer lukt begint het gebruik van geweld waarbij de duitsers straat in, straat uit, blok per blok de joden opjagen naar de treinen of vermoorden. Niemand
blijft gespaard behalve de arbeiders en hun familie, die worden pas in 1944 getransporteerd.

Explanation: This pretty star field in the constellation Ophiucus is centered on a star not often seen - RS Ophiuci. In fact, early last week RS Oph suddenly became visible to the naked eye for the first time since 1985. A type of cataclysmic variable star classified as a recurrent nova, RS Oph dramatically increased in brightness from 11th magnitude, too faint to appear on some star charts. Historically, RS Oph was seen to go through only four similar outbursts since 1898. Such stars are now modeled as interacting binary star systems, composed of a compact white dwarf star co-orbiting with a swollen red giant. As material falls away from the red giant it collects in a rotating accretion disk before ultimately falling on to the white dwarf. Disk instabilities, or a build up of material on the compact star result in the occasional but rapid release of energy through nuclear burning. At an estimated distance of 3,000 light-years, RS Ophiuci is now reported to be fading rapidly. This telescopic view spans about 2 degrees (4 full moons) and was captured on the morning of February 16 from the RAS Observatory under New Mexico skies.
