Eerder was er op TechZine al te lezen dat de eerste Xbox 360 game al gekraakt is. Hackers melden nu dat ze de laatste hand leggen aan een modchip voor Microsoft's nieuwste speeltje.
De groep, die verder niet bekendgemaakt wordt, heeft in een persbericht aan een aantal sites laten weten dat het haar chip binnen enkele weken op de markt zal gaan brengen.
"Iedereen in onze groep probeert een chip te ontwikkelen die volledig functioneert. Met de chip zullen gamers alle functies van de Xbox 360 kunnen gebruiken. We denken dat de chip binnen een paar weken te verkrijgen zal zijn. Helaas zijn de chips zeer complex en kunnen er, net zoals bij onze eerste poging, een aantal exemplaren niet goed functioneren", aldus de hackers in het bericht.
Microsof heeft recentelijk nog een verklaring gegeven die deze zaken tegenspreekt. "We hebben verbeteringen aangebracht in de hardware en software om de Xbox 360 te beschermen tegen piraterij en modchips. We hebben onze ervaringen met de Xbox dan ook toegepast op de Xbox 360. Daardoor konden we de zwakke punten die hackers uit wisten te buiten in de originele Xbox er uit lichten en deze zwakke punten elimineren bij de Xbox 360", aldus de verklaring.
Als de hackers echter met succes een chip weten uit te brengen voor de Xbox 360, dan zal Microsoft zich nog eens goed achter de oren moeten krabben en moeten kijken of de zwakke punten wel echt goed zijn dichtgetimmerd, of dat er nieuwe zwakke punten zijn.
